SEND & the curriculum

Support For Students With SEND

Twickenham School prides itself on being student centred and inclusive where positive and respectful relationships are at the heart of the school. It is fundamental to the ethos of the school that every child is known, valued and feels they belong. We understand that every child has individual needs and that those needs may vary from day to day.

With this in mind, we have a support structure to provide students with the care and nurture they need.  Each child is a member of a tutor group made up of students from their year group. The tutor acts as both advocate and mentor.

The Year team consists of a range of expertise, including:

  • Head of Year
  • Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator
  • Learning Support Assistants
  • Designated Safeguarding Lead.
  • East to West Relational Worker
  • Additional external professionals are brought into school, or are referred to, via the SEND department as appropriate.

SEND and the curriculum

We offer a broad, balanced, fully sequenced and aspirational curriculum delivered via Quality First Teaching for all students including those with SEND. The way we adapt the curriculum for children with SEND differs for every child depending on their emerging needs.

Examples of adaptations to the curriculum include:

  • Timetabled Academic Support sessions for Key Stage 4 students.
  • Intervention programmes including in-class and withdrawal strategies to support the development of language and literacy skills.
  • Timeout cards to enable students to refocus during lessons.
  • Reduced GCSE options to enable students time to focus on core subjects.
  • Delivery of specialist interventions on a 1:1 basis.
  • Supervised homework clubs.

Our SEND Policy and SEND Information Report can be viewed within the SEND folder within the Key Information section of this website.
